Now usually I have my Monday Morning Quarterback column up on Monday, hence the name. There's a couple of reasons I decided to switch it up this week. The first was that I just switched my site over to the Bloguin Network so I wrote up a piece about the move yesterday instead of the normal column. The second was that I wanted to cover the Packers/Vikings game. I mean my site's name is Favre Dollar Footlongs; it only seems right to. So the Top Ten column will probably get pushed out this week unless I find some free time later today to do so. Let's get to the recap though.
Saturday was a great day of college football. Maybe it was the rain in a bunch of games, but many of the games were a battle the whole way through. The Michigan versus Michigan State game was a wet affair. Everything thought this was going to be a solid win for Rich Rod, but the weather didn't help things. Tate Forcier dropped the ball numerous times on the snap and had some troubles passing it. Somehow this kid made amazing plays and scored a TD for Michigan with second remaining to send the Wolverines into OT. Of course in OT he pulled a Greg Paulus and threw an INT that gave the game to Michigan State. That's the biggest problem with college football OT. Everyone talks about how it's so great and better then the NFL, but one fluke turnover and the game is basically over. I think it should be a mix of both. Speaking of overtime games, the Notre Dame and Washington game looked very similar. The Irish were down five and Jimmy Clausen drove down the field and gave the Irish the lead with about a minute left. The Irish then decided to scrum rugby style and push in Robert Hughes for the 2-point conversion and a three point lead. Washington then drove down the field and easily passed on a horrible Irish secondary to setup the tying field goal. The Irish scored quick in OT and Washington did nothing to give Notre Dame the win. Notre Dame is a tough team to evaluate. They should be beating a team like Washington or Michigan State by about 10 and they somehow are down late in the game, but always find a way to win. Jimmy Clausen looks great and shows a new leadership like never before. USC crushed California, Penn State looked good in the second half to easily beat Illinois, and Houston lost to UTEP. Yay! We get another team we don't want to see in a BCS bowl out of the picture. Two other crazy games were LSU vs. Georgia, where Georgia scores with less then two minutes left, gets called for a ridiculous excessive celebration penalty, and LSU drove the field for the win. Penalties are a whole other column waiting to happy. Maybe the Thursday Rant *hint *hint. The late game we saw Miami defeat Oklahoma by a score of 21-20. Miami definitely bounced back and looked good and Jacory Harris played well. I'm fine with Miami going back to "The U", but Jacory needs to chill out with his hair escapades. He should be wearing "U Fag" in his hair instead of "U Swag". He looks ridiculous and only helps to further Miami as "Thug U" instead of "The U".
The NFL is amazing! I say it every week, but for some reason this year there are so many great games. The Patriots played well enough to beat the Ravens in the early game even though that had some iffy penalties as well. Can we please let the players play a little bit, this is getting ridiculous how much the league gives every rule it can to Tom Brady. The Redskins somehow beat the Bucs after losing to the Lions last week. Both teams look horrible. Jaguars crushed the all defeated Titans and the Saints beat the Jets with defense. Mark Sanchez looked like a typical rookie QB and fumbled the ball in the end zone and threw a pick to turn into a TD. Not a good showing Marky Mark. The Colts were the Colts and the Browns were the Browns. The Browns had this game. Derek Anderson is definitely the better choice since Brady Quinn can't make throws past 15 yards and the Browns had a 6 point lead when Cincy drove down the field and scored a TD with a minute and a half left. Miraculously, the Browns blocked the XP and sent the game into OT. I think everyone thought this game was going to the Browns after that and they played well in OT. They didn't play well enough though as Cincy got a FG with 0:04 seconds left to give the victory to the Bengals. Can we give the Browns hockey scoring so at least the game can show up as an OT loss? The Steelers and Chargers played the late night game and the Steelers looked great. They got out to a 28-0 lead before almost coughing it up again. I don't know what's wrong with this defense other then Troy Polamalu, but they can't hold a lead. It's too the point now that you want the offense on the field, down by points with the remaining time left, then the defense on at the end of the game with a lead. Rashard Mendenhall looked like a beast accumulating over 190 yards and the O-line was much improved. Steelers got two easy upcoming games so we'll see if he can keep that going.
Yes, now it's time to discuss the football game of the century, at least according to ESPN. I don't even know how to explain this game. It was the most hyped game I've seen in a regular season and the game was great. Problem is I really didn't care. It's week four to me, it's not Brett's playing his old team. I don't need a shot of Diana Favre to see what she's doing after each play. Congrats to Brett who played a remarkable game, but are we really going to care about this game next year? No. The next one will be hyped even more and it will probably have the same result to me. What did people want to see? Brett coming out and crying? A verbal spar between Brett and Aaron? Everybody loves revenge and there's nothing wrong with that as long as you do it in the correct way. I think I was just so sick of hearing about it from every media outlet that it just turned into a ridiculous notion how important revenge was. Mort is the worst basically saying a bunch of garbage like, "I could tell after the first month that Brett was away from the Packers, he was picking tomatos in Mississippi and started giving the green ones bruise marks because it reminded him of the Packers." People just need to chill a little bit; this wasn't life and death.
So great games all weekend and there will be plenty more to come as we get to watch # who cares Florida vs # who cares LSU to see who is one of the best teams in the SEC. The NFL really doesn't have that great of games unless you want to count the Bengals vs. Ravens or the Falcons vs. 49ers. I'm sure some excitement will come out of nowhere though.
